Making a Difference
Carefree Church began in May of 1993 when Dwight & Tricia Surratt left their staff position at a church in Albuquerque, NM to build a church in the North Phoenix area. God had put in their hearts a vision for a place that would “make a difference in our world by introducing people to Jesus Christ and His teachings at whatever point we found them in their spiritual journey.”
A New Type of Church
To accomplish this, they knew they would have to have a new kind of church, so upon their arrival in Arizona they started asking people who didn’t attend church what their reasons were for not attending. The answers were almost always the same: “The music is out of date and doesn’t make sense,” “the sermons are boring and I don’t get anything out of them,” and “our kids hate going.” In response, God gave them a vision for a church that had relevant and exciting music, involved drama and multi-media, sermons that would be relevant and positive, and children and youth programs that kids and teenagers would not only learn from, but love coming to! It would also be a place where adults could bring their friends and not be afraid they would be blown-away or feel out of place.
This vision has remained the core of our ministries here at Carefree Church and over the years we have seen many lives touched by God and impacted through the church. Our church family has grown, and to accommodate this growth—and in anticipation of future growth, we have begun a building program that will allow us to have facilities large enough and versatile enough to house the various ministry events necessary to effectively reach out to our community.
With God’s blessing and the generosity of our people, we have purchased 18 1/2 acres across from our Chapel/Youth Center location on Carefree Hwy to meet the needs of our growing congregation. We are now beginning phase 2 and are excited to begin the next chapter on our main facility. We hope to see you there to witness what God is doing here at Carefree Church.
